There are some events that remind you just how powerful communities can be when they come together with a shared purpose. The 2026 Godwin Lawson Memorial Tournament was undoubtedly one of them.
Now in its 15th year, the tournament has become far more than a day of football. It is a celebration of Godwin Lawson's life, a commitment to tackling knife crime, and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when organisations, volunteers and local communities unite behind young people.
Hosted in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, this year's tournament was another outstanding success. From the moment the first whistle blew until the final presentations, there was an incredible atmosphere of positivity, respect and togetherness. Everywhere you looked, there were young people enjoying the game, encouraging one another and demonstrating exactly what sport can achieve when it's used as a force for good.
It was particularly encouraging to see such strong support from across London. We were honoured to welcome Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Mayor of Haringey Councillor Dawn Barnes, alongside community leaders, youth organisations and teams from across the country. Their presence reinforced an important message: preventing youth violence and creating opportunities for young people is a responsibility shared by all of us.
Football has an incredible ability to bring people together regardless of background, and the Godwin Lawson Memorial Tournament continues to demonstrate that. Every match, every conversation and every act of encouragement throughout the day reflected the values that Godwin's legacy represents—hope, resilience, respect and opportunity.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, the sponsors and partners who continue to invest in young people, and the many organisations that gave their time to make the day such a success.
A special thank you must go to the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, whose long-standing partnership has helped the tournament grow into one of the most respected community football events of its kind. Their commitment extends well beyond a single event. Throughout the summer, the Foundation continues to provide young people across Haringey and Enfield with opportunities through fitness sessions, holiday camps, girls' football festivals and careers support—creating positive pathways that can genuinely change lives.
We're also incredibly grateful to the London Violence Reduction Unit and the Premier League for their continued backing of this important work. Their support enables programmes that do far more than organise football tournaments—they help build confidence, develop life skills and create safer communities.
Most importantly, thank you to every young person who took part. Your enthusiasm, sportsmanship and determination made the day unforgettable. You are the reason this tournament exists, and seeing so many young people enjoying themselves, supporting one another and embracing the spirit of the event was a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
As the final matches ended and the medals were presented, there was a real sense that this was about far more than football. It was about creating memories, building friendships, inspiring ambition and showing young people that they are valued by their communities.
Fifteen years on, the Godwin Lawson Memorial Tournament continues to honour one life by positively impacting thousands of others.
